Nelly Korda, world No. 1 in women's golf, who recently won the Chevron Championship, the first major tournament of the LPGA Tour season, and achieved her fifth consecutive LPGA Tour victory, expressed her feelings, saying, "I want to enjoy it and continue my winning streak."
Korda won the Chevron Championship (total prize money of $7.9 million) at The Club Carlton Woods (par 72) in The Woodland, Texas, with a 13-under 275 total.
Korda, who has won all five tournaments since January of this year, will have his second major championship after the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in June 2021.
Korda is the third LPGA Tour winner in five consecutive tournaments, following Nancy Lopez (USA) in 1978 and Annika Sorenstam (Sweden) in 2005.
Korda, which has continued its overwhelming momentum by participating in six competitions this year and winning five of the nine competitions held this year, earned $2.424,216 (about 3.34 billion won) in prize money this year alone.
In an interview after winning, Korda confessed, "I started to become conscious of winning a major in the second half of the year. The last nine holes felt like the longest of my life. Winning a major has been something I've dreamed of since I was little, so now I can breathe a little bit more."
Korda has reached the top of the majors once in 2021, but the meaning of this win is different from the first.
She took a three-month break from blood clots in March 2022, and last year she took a two-month break from back pain, not winning a single LPGA Tour victory.
Korda, who is going through a long tunnel of injuries, said, "Last year was especially difficult, and there were people who asked me, 'Can you win Major again?' But I kept working hard on and off the course, and my caddie Jason Mack had a hard time with me. "I'm grateful to Dud and the team," he said.
Korda is famous for the family of sports stars.
Her older sister Jessica Korda also won six games on the LPGA Tour and finished second at the 2022 Chevron Championship.
His father, Petr Korda, won the doubles at the Australian Open, a major tennis tournament, in 1996, won the singles title at the same tournament in 1998, and his mother, Regina, competed in the Czechoslovak national tennis tournament at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Also, Nelly's younger brother Sebastian Korda once won the ATP Tour.
Korda will try to set a new record for six consecutive LPGA Tour wins at the LA Open, which opens in Los Angeles, California, on the 25th (local time).
Korda said, "I enjoy the situation right now and I want to continue winning consecutive games if possible. I'm grateful for even five consecutive wins."
Korda, the 2021 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, is considered a leading candidate for gold at the Paris Olympics, which opens in July this year.
