Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run in the LA Dodgers uniform. Ohtani started as the second designated hitter in the Major League Baseball (MLB) home game against San Francisco on the 4th and hit his first home run of the season in his fourth and final at-bat.
Last year, Ohtani, who became the top home run player in the American League (44), averaged 13.6 times at bat. However, he had not hit a single home run in eight games and 37 times at bat until the previous day. He struck out, had an infield hit, and a fly ball to the left field on the day, and recorded no home run until 40 times at bat on the day. Then, in the bottom of the seventh inning with a 4-3 lead, San Francisco Giants outfielder Taylor Rogers hit the fifth pitch (150 kilometers per hour) outside the sinker on the fifth pitch of the left-handed relief pitcher, to overcome the drought of home runs. It was a large home run that flew 131 meters.
Ohtani's season-ending home run is the latest since his major league debut in 2018. He once reported his first home run of the season in eight games and 31 at-bats for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021. After the game, Ohtani said, "I tried to control my nerves and swing. I'm glad my first home run finally came out."
Thanks to Ohtani's wedge home run, the Dodgers beat San Francisco 5-4 and swept all three home games. It was the leading Dodgers in the National League West with seven wins and two losses. Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants had no hit in four times at bat on the day, failing to get on base for the first time in seven games since his MLB debut. His batting average for this season fell to 0.250 (7 hits in 28 times at bat).
Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees, who set a new record for most home runs in a season with 62 in 2022, also hit his first home run of the season in 30 at-bats for the first time in seven games since the opening in an away game against Arizona. Judge hit a two-run homer to the right-center field off starting pitcher Merrill Kelly with one out and a runner on first base in the top of the fourth inning. Kelly was a player who played for the SK Wyverns (currently SSG) in the Korean pro baseball league from 2015 to 2018. The Yankees won 6-5 after a close game in the 11th inning of overtime.
