The Mississippi Band of Choto Indians made history when Pearl River Resort's new sports book became the first tribal sports book to open in the U.S. with a system certified to fully comply with GLI (Gaming Laboratories International)'s landmark GLI-33 event betting technology standards.
At the request of the Choctaw Gaming Commission, GLI helped the Commission's technical and audit officers with on-site support to verify the internal control and installation configuration of IGT's "margin maker" event betting system to GLI-33 standards, which helped ensure the complete live performance of the sportsbook system from the moment the first bet was made.
Additionally, sports betting experts at GLI University provided on-site classroom-style training on various aspects of sports betting from a technical, regulatory and operational perspective for two and a half days.
"The Tactivation Game Board has taken a very pragmatic approach to sports betting," said Mackenzie Hauh, GLI's engineering director. "They first ensured that their commissioners, auditors, and technical staff were familiar with events and many aspects of sports betting, such as different types of betting, trading platforms, and live feeds, reporting and auditing, and change management. This allowed them to take an educated risk-based approach to choose which aspects of their systems should be regulated and audited without stifling the need for operations on such organic systems. And through the on-site technical teams leading up to GLI University's training and live, GLI was happy and excited to help."
GLI dedicated a team of experts to developing GLI-33 as the industry's first event betting technology standard, and the working group spent about a year creating GLI-33. The need for this standard became apparent after GLI received numerous requests from U.S. state regulators, sports betting operators, sovereign tribal countries, lottery companies, and industry vendors around the world to establish clear and cohesive technology standards for sports/event betting systems. The hope was for them to establish standards to help regulate and/or enforce legal betting on sports and other events.
Upon the official release of GLI-33, the Mississippi Band of Choto Indians was one of several regulators who immediately adopted the new standards. Prior to the release of GLI-33, part of the GLI Standard Series, the draft standards received extensive industry reviews and input from gaming and lottery regulators, industry vendors, industry operators, and industry trade associations.
Mississippi became only the third state to legalize and launch sports betting after a historic Supreme Court ruling overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), after Delaware and New Jersey, allowing it to expand sports betting opportunities nationwide.
