Woori Card, the men's professional volleyball player, has said goodbye to veteran coach Shin Young-chul, who has been called the "Spring volleyball evangelist." As the next coach, Woori Card is expected to open up various possibilities, including foreign head coaches, and start devising new games for the upcoming season.
Woori Card officially announced on the 27th that it has decided not to renew its contract with Shin Young-chul, whose contract expires at the end of this season
Since taking over as Woori Card in April 2018, Shin has achieved the feat of advancing to the postseason for six consecutive seasons. He has transformed the bottom-ranked team into a strong team by ranking first in the regular season in the 2019-20 season, second in the championship game in the 2020-21 season, and second in the regular season in the 2023-24 season.
Although he proved his leadership and leadership by finding many players and leading his team to a high altitude, he was disappointed that he was weak in big games. Shin, who is the leader in the number of wins (296 wins and 227 losses) in men's and women's professional volleyball leagues, showed somewhat weak performance in the postseason.
This season, Woori has advanced to the playoffs as the second-ranked team, but lost to the third-ranked OK Financial Group for two consecutive years. Woori Card has lost six consecutive games in terms of "spring volleyball." It lacked support as it lost to lower-ranked teams for two consecutive years in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
Shin played 523 games in the regular season, recording a winning rate of 56.6 percent with 296 wins and 227 losses. Including the postseason, he recorded a winning rate of 54.3 percent with 303 wins and 255 losses in 558 games. In spring volleyball, he only had a 20 percent winning rate with seven wins and 28 losses.
Above all, it was painful to lose Woori Card's direct ticket to the championship game secured at the end of the regular season to Hyundai Capital and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance.
According to the world of volleyball, Woori Card is expected to seek not only a domestic leader but also a foreign coach. It leaves open various possibilities. If a foreign coach comes, as many as five of the seven teams in the men's team will have a foreign coach.
Hyundai Capital also appointed Philippe Blanc, who previously coached the Japanese national team, ahead of the next season, following the success of Korean Air coach Tommy Tilikainen of Finland and OK Financial Group coach Masajisa Ogino of Japan. KB Insurance, which was in last place, also hired Miguel Rivera, who recently led the Spanish team.
Woori Card said, "We will appoint a new coach as soon as possible and support the team as much as possible to take off again."
