Igaming is currently only legal in six U.S. states. However, with the sector showing impressive growth, this number is expected to grow in the near future.
Online casino revenue in the U.S. rose 22.9% year-over-year to $6.2 billion in 2023. Gaming GGR was $4.75 billion short of sports betting GGR. Even though gaming was legalized as sports betting, this was legalized in less than a sixth of states.
Online gaming accounted for 24.7% of the nation's GGR in 2023. Again, that's an annual high and up from 19.5% the year before.
Many states are considering introducing games in 2024. But one of the places where games are unlikely to be legal this year is New York, after Gov. Kathy Hochul removed them from the 2025 administrative budget.
This was despite New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo filing a revised gaming bill. Senate Bill S8185 was built on Adabbo's previous attempts to introduce online games in Empire State.
