Striker Oh Hyun-kyu, a former member of the Korean men's national soccer team, left Celtic, a prestigious Scottish club, and wore a Belgian KRC Genk uniform.
Genk officially announced the recruitment of Oh Hyun-kyu on the club's official website on the 14th , saying, "I signed a four-season contract with Oh Hyun-kyu."
According to multiple foreign media sources, Genk paid a transfer fee of 4.5 million pounds about 8 billion won to Celtic to recruit Oh Hyun-kyu.
Oh Hyun-kyu, who moved to Celtic from Suwon Samsung in the professional soccer K League 2 in January last year, scored seven goals in the 2022-2023 season, his first season in Europe, showing a good performance.
He then scored five goals until the middle of the season in the 2023-2024 season and played as a backup striker, but was completely pushed back in the main competition in the second half.
In the end, Oh Hyun-kyu, a young striker born in 2001, joined hands with Genk, who was looking for a team that could play more and was trying to reinforce the striker.
The current leader of Genk is director Thorsten Fink.
Pink is a teacher of Son Heung-min Tottenham, a senior member of Oh Hyun-kyu's national team and a leading striker in Korean soccer, and is a familiar leader to Korean soccer fans.
When Son Heung-min was playing for Hamburg Germany, he burst his potential by using him as a main resource.
Oh Hyun-kyu said, "Henk is a team with a lot of experience in youth development. As interest became clear, my choice for transfer became clear. I want to show my performance quickly," signaling his performance at Genk.
Genk also expressed high expectations, saying, "Oh is a striker capable of scoring goals. He is a sharp player who is threatening even inside the box thanks to his tall height."
Meanwhile, Genk is a team that ranked fifth in the league last season and is considered the top in the Belgian stage.
Oh Hyun-kyu's entry into the Belgian league has made the Korean Derby more likely. Currently in Belgium, Korean national midfielder Hong Hyun-seok is active in Hent.
